The 1st Wheel of Knowledge: Capoeira, Culture and Resistance is a celebration of the cultural and historical richness of capoeira, designed to gather the community of Manaus in a space for the exchange of knowledge, experiences and social inclusion.

This project seeks to value capoeira in all its dimensions - such as physical practice, artistic expression, pedagogical instrument and symbol of cultural resistance. During their realization, practical workshops and round tables will bring together masters, practitioners and researchers from various regions, promoting a unique exchange of experiences and methodologies.

objectives

  • Strengthen and preserve the tradition of capoeira as an intangible cultural heritage, promoting its history and values ​​for new generations.

  • Create an affordable and welcoming space where people of all ages and levels of experience can experience and learn about capoeira.

  • Foster social inclusion and diversity, through activities open to the public and designed for different audiences.

  • Establish connections between masters, practitioners and cultural institutions, encouraging new partnerships and future projects.

What will happen?

  • Capoeira workshops - focused on various audiences, with practical and theoretical content about styles, musicality and foundations of capoeira.

  • Round tables - meetings and debates with masters and researchers, discussing topics such as cultural resistance, capoeira pedagogy and social inclusion.

  • Audiovisual Registration - Construction of a Digital Project Collection, with records of activities and testimonials for memory and public consultation.

Who is this project for?

The project is open and free, and was designed to:

  • Children, youth, adults and the elderly of the Manauara community.

  • Capoeira practitioners of all levels.

  • Educators, students and researchers interested in Afro-Brazilian culture and capoeira.

  • General public that values ​​cultural diversity and inclusion.

More than an event, the 1st Wheel of Knowledge is an invitation to reflect and appreciate capoeira as a living and relevant practice. We believe that meetings like this strengthen community ties, promote cultural citizenship and inspire future generations to recognize and preserve this important cultural heritage.

Meet the workshop facilitators

JONATAS CABRAL DOS SANTOS

Workshop: Fundamentals of Atabaque Making

Known in capoeira as Professor Carcará, he is a luthier specializing in percussion instruments. His capoeira journey began in 2007 through the "Clube do Talento" project at Luiza Carneiro Dantas School in Rio Branco (AC). In 2019, he received the title of Capoeira Professor from Grupo Senzala de Capoeira. In 2014, he started a capoeira group in the Cidade Nova neighborhood, where he gained experience working with children facing motor and spatial challenges.

At the 1st Roda dos Saberes: Capoeira, Culture, and Resistance, Carcará makes a significant contribution:

  • as the facilitator of the Fundamentals of Atabaque Making workshop, sharing his technical and cultural knowledge in the handcrafted production of instruments;

  • fostering the exchange of knowledge with masters, contramestres, and practitioners;

  • strengthening regional capoeira connections and honoring the cultural memory of Afro-Brazilian resistance.

HEMERSON PEREIRA DE SOUSA

Workshop: Muscle Strengthening for Injury Prevention

A physical education professional, nurse, and passionate capoeirista, his experience combines discipline, experience, and body knowledge, making him a valuable contribution to those who play, teach, and live capoeira.

 

His journey began at the Palmares Association, continued through the Brazilian Navy and was consolidated with impactful projects, such as the Ginga Project, in Mangaratiba (RJ), always using capoeira as a tool for transformation and well-being.

 

In the 1st Circle of Knowledge: Capoeira, Culture, and Resistance, Hemerson leads a special workshop focused on caring for the capoeirista's body. The activity includes muscle-strengthening techniques applied to capoeira practice, focusing on injury prevention, improving physical performance, and longevity in the art.

LEUSANTO VALÉRIO

Workshop: Introduction to Pedagogical Capoeira

Known in capoeira as Master Léu Senzala, he holds degrees in Teaching, Pedagogy, and specializations in Higher Education Teaching and Corporate Pedagogy. A Capoeira Master with 30 years of experience, he has dedicated his life to teaching, practicing, and promoting this art form. Throughout his journey, he has participated in numerous national events, leading workshops, rodas, and lectures that emphasize the role of capoeira as a tool for education, social inclusion, and cultural appreciation.

With academic training in Teaching and Pedagogy—alongside specializations in Higher Education and Corporate Pedagogy—Master Léu bridges scholarly knowledge and oral tradition, offering workshops, rodas, and talks that highlight capoeira as a powerful means of education, social inclusion, and cultural resistance.

PAULO DA LUZ PAULA

Workshop: Capoeira Experience

Known in the world of capoeira as Master Paulo Preto, he is one of the great cultural references of Amapá and the entire North of Brazil.

Founder of the Associação Arte Negra (Black Art Association), Master Paulo Preto is a tireless defender of brazilian culture. His practice integrates body, music, and history, establishing a deep connection between capoeira and its ancestral roots, preserving and strengthening Brazil’s cultural memory.

As a capoeirista, educator, and cultural agent, he shares experiences and knowledge that go beyond the limits of the roda (capoeira circle). In this project, his workshops become spaces of exchange, welcoming, and collective building, where capoeira is lived as an art of resistance, social inclusion, and civic education.

The presence of Master Paulo Preto in Amazonas is an invitation to the exchange of knowledge and the celebration of capoeira. He shares his story, learns from each encounter, and transforms every roda into a space of dialogue and growth.
